Dear Tablers,
It gives me great pleasure to report on The Rays of 95 for our blog.
Rays of 95 is a historic milestone in the history of MMRT95. A milestone which is a cherished memory for all tablers of 95. I would like to share with you guys the planning and the execution of Rays of 95.
Our projects convener Tr. Govind expressed his desire to do a joint project with Sankara Nethralya at our first council meet in July.
Tr. Govind is on the board of Sankara Netralay and he felt that if we could associate with them , it would give us immense credibility as well as publicity. At that time MMRT 95 was busy in organizing Mardigras. The council was enthused by this project and decided to take it up in earnest after the area 2 agm was executed.
In October we decided to go ahead with this project. Since it entailed a donation of 5 lacs we wanted to make sure the money was well spent. After a couple of deliberations we decided that the money would be used for 95 surgeries in the department of retinal surgeries in Sankara Nethralya. The floor unanimously said go ahead and then we decided to make the occasion grand. It was christened Rays of 95.
At the spur of the moment, Tr. Naresh informed us that his school buddy- World Chess Champion Grandmaster Vish Anand was visiting Chennai and if we could organize the dates accordingly, he felt he could get Vish there. That was like a major draw of energy for us and we all took a deep breath. This was getting heady.
We fixed Nov 12 as the date and started coordinating with Sankar Netralya on the plans of the function . Chairman Emiritus, Shankara Netralya -Dr. Badrinath had a couple of meetings with us and acquainted himself with the activities of RTI and MMRT95 in particular. His humbleness and and bubbly enthusiasm made the project all the more effervescent. He went through the entire planned agenda and suggested that we have a mock chess competition at the venue with Anand to make it lighter and entertaining.
Tr. Naresh then informed us that Vish had confirmed the dates and we got cracking. Our publicity convener Tr. Pon Ravi Chandran went on a blitz and contacted all the major newspapers and TV channels of the city. He personally called up all the news agencies and made sure we had enough journalist attendance.
Then came the day and the news. At 630 am we were informed that Vish had taken ill and would be unable to attend the function. That took the wind out of our sails. We were informed that he was down with a bad viral and he would send his wife and parents to attend. The doctor would give his final report by 3 pm.
The function was to start at 530 pm and were informed at 515 pm that he was on his way. Tr. Naresh and Tr. Arun had gone to his home and had picked him up.
Dr. Badrinath was the chief guest and Area 2 Chairman Tr. Rajesh Gupta was the guest of honour. Grand master Anand was accompanied by his parents and his wife Aruna Anand. The auditorium within the premises of Sankara Netralya was packed with an audience of journalists, Area Board dignataries, circlers and tablers of MMRT95.
The function started on the dot with a welcome address by yours truly .Tr. Govind then presented the Rays of 95 to a packed audience. Rupees 5 lacs was being donated by MMRT 95 to Sankara Netralya for 95 surgeries to be conducted on deserving pateinets through a year. The money would be utilized by the department of retinal surgery on pateients suffering from retinal neuropathy. Since surgeries in this field were expensive , it was decided that this money would be used to subside the cost of surgery for deserving patients. Our Treasurer, Tr. Hemant then presented a cheque of Rs. 5 lacs to Dr. Lingam Gopal, Chairman Sankara Netralya.
Chairman Emiritus, Sankara Netralay Dr. Badrinath then took the centre stage and he gave us a brilliant presentation on the activites of Sankara Netralya. He thanked MMRT 95 for their philanthropic contribution to the institution. He expressed his desire to make this an annual event. He then commended Tr. Govind and his family for their philanthropic activites.
Grandmaster Vish Anand then took over and he expressed his satisfaction in being associated with this project. He commended MMRT95 on the planning and execution of this project. He had to cut short his speech as he was unwell but in a sporty manner he played a mock chess game with Tr. Ritesh who actually put up some resistance before going down. Tablers then took personal photos with the world chess champion.
The event had to be closed a bit early as Vish needed to get some rest . So we wound up and bid adieu to the world chess champion.
MMRT 95 thanks Area 2 Chairman Tr. Rajesh Gupta, Area 2 Project Conveners Tr, Prabhat and Tr. Senthil , Area 2 Publicity Convener Tr, Neville, Area 2 supply house convenr Tr. Ashish Modi and Chairman 162- Tr. Ashok Verghese for gracing the event.
